Public relations are an essential field that deals with the managing the communication between many different companies and organizations and the public. Public relations managers are highly trained professionals that oversee the public relations activities of an organization.

Public relations managers are responsible for the direction and implementation of publicity programs. They organize the communications of an organization with its employees and the public. They assess advertising programs to ensure they are creating the desired outcomes and evaluate the economic, social, and political trends that could potentially affect the organization. Public relations managers also create internal communications including newsletters and speeches. They often arrange interviews and respond to information requests. They also improve the relationships between the employees and management. Public relations managers are also responsible for supervising public relations staff. Public relations managers typically need at least a bachelor degree in public relations, journalism, or other related field. Many employers prefer candidates with a master degree. Public relations managers typically complete courses in political science, business administration, public speaking, public affairs, communications, and management. Many aspiring public relations managers complete internships while pursuing their education to gain experience in the field. Many public relations managers gain professional certifications in public relations to remain competitive in the field. The Public Relations Society of America offers many designations. The requirements typically include minimum education and experience and passing a written examination. Public relations managers must keep their skills up to date and stay abreast on the advancements in the field. They often complete continuing education courses and participate in seminars and conferences throughout their career.

What are the prospects for a career as a public relations manager?

Employment of public relations managers is expected to grow faster than average for all professions, increasing 17% through 2016 (1).

Job prospects are expected to be good with strong competition. Public relations managers with extensive experience and professional certification will have the best job opportunities.

How much do public relations managers make?

As of 2012, the middle 50% of public relations managers earn annual salaries between $71,894 and $98,545. The top 10% earn annual salaries of more than $111,963 (2).

A career as a public relations manager is an excellent choice for individuals with a strong interest in managing the public relations activities of an organization. Public relations managers must be able to think on their feet and make effective decisions for their company or organization. High motivation, good leadership skills, flexibility, creativity, and good problem solving are necessary characteristics. Public relations managers must be able to effectively work under stress and they must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to interact with a variety of employees, other professionals, and the public.
